Resource recovery and freshwater ecosystem restoration – prospecting for phytoremediation potential in wild macrophyte stands

چکیده
The primary aim of this study was to understand the factors, e.g., harvest frequency and plant community type, that can facilitate optimising phytoextraction in wild macrophyte communities as part a strategy for water-quality improvement resource recovery. This achieved by surveying quantifying standing stocks key nutrient pollutants such N P, range other recoverable macro micro-nutrients (Ca, K, Mg, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Zn, Na Cr). By scaling-up pollutant export potential over decade, it determined which types provide greatest levels export. Grime’s CSR framework used categorise each surveyed community, where large-statured, higher biomass producing competitor stress tolerator-type were compared with ruderal-type have rapid growth high acquisition but smaller statures. High containing or tolerator species, produce greater macronutrients (such P) harvesting, while yields micronutrient-type are more likely be influenced specific physiological traits determine leaf tissue concentration. Utilising regime multi-year time scale suggested small fast-growing ruderals could yield 4–6 times concentration micronutrients tolerator-dominated P from 25 g/m2 versus 5 competitor/stress communities. These results emphasise need consider both harvesting when using management tool. We anticipate these will help guide environmental managers their approach developing circular economy schemes improve water quality through

Cadmium accumulation in the rootless macrophyte Wolffia globosa and its potential for phytoremediation.
Cadmium (Cd) pollution around the world is a serious issue demanding acceptable solutions, one of which is phytoremediation that is both cost-effective and eco-friendly. Removal of Cd from contaminated water using plants with high growth rates and sufficient Cd accumulation abilities could be an appropriate choice. Here, we investigated a potential Cd accumulator, Wolffia, a rootless duckweed w...
متن کاملEcosystem recovery following selenium contamination in a freshwater reservoir.
Belews Lake, North Carolina, was contaminated by selenium in wastewater released from a coal-fired electric generating facility during 1974-1985. Selenium bioaccumulated in aquatic food chains and caused severe reproductive failure and teratogenic deformities in fish. Beginning in 1986, the electric utility company changed its ash disposal practices and selenium-laden wastewater no longer enter...

Future planetary robotics will require path planning that ensures rover safety while responding nimbly to new information and evolving goals. Such missions include prospecting for ice at the lunar poles. These challenge robotic explorers in ways not encountered in equatorial missions that benefit from high solar elevations. Longdistance traverses must be achieved over short timescales. The graz...
متن کاملDo environmental factors influence composition of potential allelochemicals in the submersed freshwater macrophyte Elodea nuttallii (Hydrocharitaceae)?
Since Elodea nuttallii (Planch.) St. John was introduced to Europe from North America in 1939 it has invaded many water bodies and is widely spread over the continent. Its success is usually related to ease of adaptation to several environmental factors (DENDÈNE et al. 1993, JONES et al. 1993, OZIMEK et al. 1993, SIMPSON 1990). Our research, however, indicates that chemical defenses may play an...
